Brief Description of Research Interest :
Under the mentorship of Dr. Nancy Carrasco, my PhD advisor, I studied the effects of overnutrition on thyroid function using mouse models and discovered several mechanisms by which overnutrition impairs thyroid hormone synthesis and utilization. Additionally, I showed that diet-induced weight loss reversed thyroid damage. I also collaborated with thyroid pathologists to demonstrate translatability of my findings to human thyroid samples.
I am now a postdoctoral research fellow trainee at Vanderbilt University Medical Center under the co-mentorship of thyroid cancer physician scientist, Dr. Vivian Weiss, and cancer epidemiologist, Dr. Martha Shrubsole. I am investigating dietary, metabolic, and environmental risk factors for thyroid cancer, as well as their mechanisms of action. Inspired by my PhD finding that weight loss benefits the thyroid, I am particularly keen to study the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as Ozempic, on thyroid health.
