Brief Description of Research Interest :

Understanding of hyperactive disorders: My research focuses on deciphering the viral mechanisms that contributes to neurological disorders in infected hosts. I am studying this complex subject in the simple, but powerful nematode model, Caenorhabditis elegans, whose nervous system is analogous in many ways to humans. The ultimate goal of my research is to connect studies of basic mechanisms to the understanding of human hyperactive disorders. In pursuit of this goal, I have obtained preliminary data which shows that viral capsid proteins hijack the normalf unctioning of key molecular and neural pathway components leading to hyperactive behavior abnormalities and extended life-span in worms (work under review in BMC Biology, BMCB-D-19-00416). To gain further insights into our understanding of virus-induced hyperactivity, we are studying the gut microbiome roles in modulating the neurotransmitter levels contributing to brain excitability and ultimately to the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Findings through this research program will provide novel insights into neurodegenerative diseases by replicating and studying the pathological process of such diseases in our simpler viral model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. The basic knowledge obtained from this study will have long-term impacts when translated into diagnosis and therapeutic strategies to help manage, treat, and perhaps cure neurological hyperactive disorders.

Discovery of novelgenes in innate immunity: The evolutionary-conserved innate immune response acts as a first-line defense mechanism to fight viral infection. To uncover new molecular signaling components acting in these pathways, we utilized the availability of BIG OMICS data and coupled them with advanced computational biology tools to develop ameta-analytic methodology. The Orsay–Caenorhabditis elegans infection system offers an attractive possibility to identify these components, since many genes are conserved with those of human. Our research study suggested a potential involvement of the E2F efl-1 transcription factor in Caenorhabditis elegans viral immunity.
